Category Definitions:
These are guidelines only.
It is up to you to choose the category that best fits your quilt entry.
-
Contemporary
– Original design or a unique interpretation through the use of color and/or
fabrics which stretch the imagination.
The quilt is beyond the traditional disciplines and demonstrates
independent and progressive techniques and designs with originality.
-
Group Entry–
a non-judging category.
Quilt top constructed by two or more past or present guild members (example:
Round Robin). Christmas Challenge
quilts are excluded.
-
Hand Appliqué
– hand appliqué dominates over piecing and other techniques in amount or
effect.
-
Miniature
– Circumference (total measurement of all
sides) is not greater than 80 inches (400 square inches).
Blocks or bed quilt in miniature scale having all the elements of a
full sized quilt, and if put on an appropriately sized bed, all parts would
be to scale. A miniature of a larger
scale block, not a single block pattern at its original size.
-
Mixed Techniques/Innovative
– Fundamental deviation fro traditional patterns using a traditional block
or design as a starting point. An
innovative quilt design brings something new, such as an idea or method, use
of fabrics, embellishments, or surface designs.
Quilts in this category should reflect the growth through traditional
quilt making.
-
Mixed Techniques/Traditional
– Where more than two techniques/styles are combined to develop design of
the quilt top; where any technique comprises 25% or more of the quilt.
Examples: pieced and appliqué;
pieced or appliqué with embellishments; appliqué, reverse appliqué, and
piecing; cross-stitch embroidery (machine or hand), or embellishment,
painting, or fabric dyeing; Crazy Quilts.
Does not include quilting or trapunto.
-
Serendipity–
a non-judging category.
Antique quilts, quilted wearables, totes, a quilt made by other than
a guild member, quilts made as a fundraiser for any non-profit organization.
Owner is not necessarily the maker.
-

- block(s) or design are known and
considered standard. For example, Log
Cabin, Lone Star, Grandmother’s Fan.
